Sound, Light, Heat, Mechanics and Electricity

Sixth grade physics begins with an introduction to the scientific method focused on building skills in objective observation, and clearly describing these observations both verbally and in writing. Topics covered include sound, light, heat, magnetism, and electricity. Students begin each topic examining their individual experience with the subject, after which the class moves through a series of demonstrations of key concepts and principles.

The study of sound explores the sources of sound, how sound propagates through various media, and the concepts of vibration, frequency, amplitude, duration, tone, and timbre. The study of light includes an exploration of the nature of darkness and light, the properties of light, and the fundamentals of reflection and refraction. The study of heat includes an exploration of the sources and propagation of heat, and the effects of heat on matter. The study of magnetism includes the sources and properties of magnetism, the compass, and the concepts of magnetic attraction and repulsion. The study of electricity includes the sources and properties of static electricity, the relationship between electricity and magnetism, and the concepts of current, flow and charge.
