Dear Sixth Grade Families:
Welcome to Sixth Grade: As I write, we are less than 24 hours away from the start of a new school year. Our new classroom has been thoroughly cleaned, long-burned-out lights have been replaced, strange residues from years of neglect scrubbed from the cealing rearranged and repaired, and larger desks and chairs have been gathered from all corners of the school (no thanks to our admin support staff who apparently had higher priorities). I’d like to thank everyone who came out this weekend to help prepare the classroom. We are ready.
Announcing Tina Tian, Assistant Teacher: Please join me in welcoming Tina Tian as our sixth grade Assistant Teacher. Tina volunteered in our class through much of fifth grade, and is very familiar with our students and classroom routines. Tina brings a wealth of experience and talent. She grew up on China, is bi-lingual, and has traveled widely. Tina studied Radio Technology before becoming the Financial Manager of her family’s business. She is currently studying at SRJC, and is considering becoming a California credentialed teacher.
Mt Lassen Field Trip: Our first field trip is coming up fast! From Sept 5-8, we will camp at Butte Lake in Mt Lassen National Park. Goals for this trip include: practicing low-impact camping and hiking, working in small groups to independently prepare, cook and cleanup for all meals, exploring unique volcanic areas, such as Cinder Cone, Bumpass Hell, Devastated Area and Subway Cave, learning about the history, geology, and the plant and animal communities of Mt Lassen, learning orientation skills with topographical map and compass, observing the night sky, finding constellations, learning star navigation, and last but not least cooking and eating great camp food. Below are links to more information about this trip.

Please make an appointment if you feel you need extra time. I will continue to make weekly packets, which the students will bring home on Mondays. The class website will remain the best place to find the most up-to-date and detailed information. My email address is firstname.lastname@example.org.
